Abdominal Training: Best Exercises for Stronger Abs
There are many reasons why the human body can lose its ideal shape. One of them is a lack of exercise. The abdominal muscles are one of the body areas that can lose strength and conditioning when they are not exercised regularly. However, with consistent abdominal exercises, it is possible to strengthen them and improve core stability.
Best Exercises for Abdominal Training
Many exercises can help improve the strength and physical condition of the abdominal muscles. Some studies support the benefits of regular abdominal training, highlighting that these exercises can help strengthen and define the muscles when performed consistently. Let’s look at some of the best exercises recommended by coach Víctor Téllez.
Calisthenics is another effective way to strengthen the core using your own body weight. You can explore more movements in our guide to calisthenics, its benefits, and exercises.
Sit-Up – Abdominal Training
The sit-up is an exercise that does not require any additional equipment. Only a space of about three metres on each side is needed. For added comfort, you can place an exercise mat on the floor. These are the steps to follow:
Starting Position
Lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent and both soles of your feet flat on the floor.
Execution
Raise your torso towards your knees and then slowly lower it back to the starting position. Repeat the movement in a controlled and continuous manner.
Sets
You can perform ten complete movements (up and down). Then rest for one minute before repeating the process. You can aim for four sets, adjusting the number according to your fitness level.
There is a variation for those who want to increase the intensity of the exercise. A medicine ball can be held with both hands while raising the torso.
Leg Raise Crunch
The crunch with leg raises is another exercise that does not require additional equipment. It can easily be performed at home, provided you have a clear space free of obstacles. It is a core-strengthening exercise that requires controlled movement.
Starting Position
Lie on your back on the floor, keeping your hands and feet positioned comfortably.
Execution
Raise your legs while keeping them as straight as comfortably possible. Then, using your hands, try to reach towards your feet without straining your neck.
Time
You can perform this exercise for approximately 20 to 30 seconds, depending on your ability and fitness level.
Leg Lift
Raising your legs until they reach a vertical position can effectively engage the abdominal muscles. Leg lifts are particularly useful for working the lower portion of the abdominal region.
Starting Position
Lie on your back on the floor with your legs fully extended and your hands placed under your hips or lower back for support.
Execution
Raise both legs until they reach a vertical position. Then lower them slowly until they almost return to the starting position.
Repetition
This exercise involves raising and lowering your legs several times. When lowering them, you can choose whether to touch the floor or stop just before reaching it, depending on your ability.
Sets
After raising and lowering your legs ten times, take a one-minute break. Then repeat the exercise until you complete four sets.

Bike
The name of this workout makes it easy to understand the movement involved. The exercise is similar to the pedalling motion we make when riding a bicycle.
Starting Position
Lie horizontally on your back with your legs extended.
Execution
Bend your knees and raise your head and shoulders slightly. Place your hands behind your head without pulling on your neck. Bring your right knee towards your chest while moving your left elbow towards it.
Repetition
Continue the movement by switching sides. Bring your left knee towards your chest while moving your right elbow towards it. Repeat the alternating movement in a controlled manner.
Conclusion
Abdominal training can help strengthen your core, improve stability, and support better physical fitness. Exercises such as sit-ups, leg raise crunches, leg lifts, and bicycle movements can be included in a regular workout routine.
There is also a variation for those who want to increase the intensity of their sit-ups. A medicine ball can be held with both hands while raising the torso. Start with a manageable number of repetitions and gradually increase the difficulty as your strength improves.
